Classifications of Water Damage

Category 1

Referred to as “clean water” as it does not contain any sewage or toxins which will not put you and your family at risk. An example of this would be overflowing sinks or bathtubs, broken water supply lines and pipes, or leaking toilet tank. These water damages can typically be dried easily with no cause for extra remediation or concern for the owners health. However, if Category 1 water damage isn’t addressed right away, it will escalate to a higher category very quickly.

Category 2

Referred to as “grey water” this is more severe as it is dirty water that is contaminated in some way and could cause risks. This includes water from washing machines, dishwashers, sump pump backups or toilets. It is important to remediate this type of water damage immediately and professionally because if left untreated it will become a serious risk to health and safety.

Category 3

Referred to as “black water”, this is the most severe classification of water damage and it requires urgent action to mitigate the danger risk. Flood waters, river water, sewage and standing water that has started microbial growth are all examples of black water. This category can cause serious illness or even death if it is not dealt with by professionals with proper disinfectant and procedures.
