Our Sewer Backup Cleanup Process
Contact & Assessment
Call us immediately. Our certified technicians will be onsite to assess the extent of the backup: how far water has spread, the contamination level, damage to materials, and safety concerns.
Rapid Response
We first secure the scene—turn off power where needed, seal off affected areas to prevent cross-contamination, and use protective gear.
Water Extraction & Removal
We remove contaminated water, sewage, and debris using industrial-grade extraction tools. All materials that can’t be salvaged are removed safely.
Cleaning, Disinfection & Sanitization
Every affected surface is cleaned and treated with hospital-grade disinfectants. We also sanitize contents and materials that can be restored.
Drying & Dehumidification
Using powerful air movers and dehumidifiers, we dry out walls, floors, and other structural elements to prevent mold growth and further damage.
Restoration & Repair
After the area is cleaned and dried, we repair or replace damaged materials—drywall, flooring, baseboards, etc.—to restore your property to its pre-loss condition.

What Happens During a Sewer Backup
Sewer backups can occur from blocked or broken sewer lines, heavy rainfall overwhelming municipal systems, tree root intrusion, or faulty plumbing. Whatever the cause, the result is contaminated water entering your property—through toilets, drains, or even foundation cracks. The risks include damage to flooring, walls, plumbing fixtures, and hidden structural damage, plus significant health hazards.
Why Fast Response Matters
Health Risks: Sewage carries bacteria, viruses, and pathogens. Standing contaminated water can lead to illness.
Structural Damage: Materials like drywall, wood, and insulation absorb moisture quickly. Delays can lead to rot, mold, and further damage.
Cost Escalation: The longer the backup sits, the more extensive (and expensive) the cleanup and repairs.
At Ultrawest, we’re available 24/7. The quicker we get to you, the more damage we can prevent.
Categories & Severity: Understanding the Risks
Not all water damage is the same. When dealing with a sewer backup, the type of water involved plays a major role in how the cleanup must be handled. Water damage is classified into three categories—each with increasing levels of contamination and health risk. Most sewer backups involve Category 2 (Grey) or Category 3 (Black) water, both of which require professional cleanup.
Grey Water (Category 2)
This type of water comes from sources like washing machines, dishwashers, showers, or sump pump backups. It may contain soaps, detergents, grease, and small amounts of organic material. While it’s not immediately hazardous, grey water can pose health risks if left untreated—especially if it sits for more than 24–48 hours, as it can quickly degrade into Category 3 water.
Black Water (Category 3)
This is the most severe and dangerous category of water contamination. Black water contains raw sewage, fecal matter, bacteria, viruses, and potentially toxic substances. It may also include floodwaters that have entered sanitary systems or groundwater that has mixed with waste.
